Qualifications

  • All applicants:

    • Must be at least 18 years of age

    • Have a high school diploma or GED

    • Valid driver's license for at least two years
       

  • Abbreviated recruit school for experienced providers:

    • ACFR is recruiting for experienced providers to join the ACFR family. Selected recruits will participate in a 10-week paid school to ensure success with our department. Topics covered will include firefighter survival, EVOC, TECC, and the ACFR Way.

    • Applicants should have Firefighter/EMS experience, as well as Virginia EMS certification (or ability to obtain reciprocity/legal recognition, with Paramedic credentials preferred) and Virginia Firefighter 1 (or ProBoard Firefighter certification).

    • Application period: April 1 – May 1, 2022

    • Recruit school begins in September 2022.
       

  • Full length recruit school:

    • Candidates should have enthusiasm, a commitment to public service, a positive attitude, and a desire to make the community a better place.

    • No prior fire rescue experience is necessary; however, many individuals have experience in a variety of industries and backgrounds that will lead them to a successful career in the fire rescue service.

    • Application period: July 1 – August 1, 2022

    • Recruit school begins in January 2023.

Firefighter/EMT Pay

- Once released, those with career fire rescue experience can expect to make between $46,305 - $77,445 (depending on experience level).*

 

- Individuals entering the fire service without prior career experience will have a salary of $44,100 during recruit school, with a 5% increase to $46,305 once released.*

- College degree incentives

   - $1000 for associate's degree

   - $2000 for bachelor's degree

- $3000 Sign-On Bonus

- Virginia Retirement System

* Includes 4% increase pending Board of Supervisors approval of FY23 Budget.

Skill-Based Pay and Stipends

- $8500 for ALS stipend 

- $1000 for Driver Pump Operator 

- $1000 for HAZMAT Ops 

- $1000 for Technical Rescue Team 

 

* Added to annual base pay after assessment and release
